The Government has finally confirmed the transitional arrangements for the increase in the unfair dismissal qualifying period from one to two years on 6 April 2012.
Subject to Parliamentary approval of the draft legislation, the increased qualifying period will only apply to employees whose period of continuous employment begins on or after 6 April. Employees whose period of continuous employment began before then will still be subject to the one-year qualifying period.
Note that the qualifying period for the entitlement to request a written statement of reasons for dismissal will also increase to two years on 6 April.
