Rupert Murdoch’s chiefs face grilling by US senator Jay Rockefeller

Jay Rockefeller, chairman of the Senate commerce committee, met senior officials of Mr Murdoch’s British newspaper division News UK.

The Murdoch press has been the target of an unprecedented investigation by Scotland Yard over alleged phone hacking and corrupt payments to officials for more than two years.

Lawyers for the media mogul have paid out millions to hacking victims as he awaits the start of a series of criminal trials involving his employees, including former chief executive Rebekah Brooks.

The long-standing threat of a similar inquiry by the US authorities took a step closer with Mr Rockefeller’s visit.

The Democrat grandee is keen to gather as much information as possible so an inquiry can be launched should the committee endorse it.

Senator Rockefeller is a long-time critic of the Murdoch empire.

When the allegations of mass phone hacking first hit the headlines in 2011, he called on the FBI and US Department of Justice to investigate “to ensure that Americans have not had their privacy violated”.

He was particularly concerned that UK-based journalists may have hacked the phones of victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
